American River White Water Rafting

Zack making the jump at the Middle Fork of the American River
We do more than guiding!

Chris Ashton
Chris learned of his passion for river rafting in 1991. He set out to pursue his dream to become a river guide. However, river guide school was not free to a poor college student living on top ramen. He decided that the best choice was to apply for an emergency loan to send himself to guide school. Chris is now a co-owner of the company he spent 13 summers sharing his love for the outdoors with people from all over the world. He met his wife of 8 years on the Middle Fork of the American River. A year later, they were married on the Truckee River in Nevada. They now have a four year old son who shows a love for the river, just as his daddy does.
Amy Ashton
Amy was looking for adventure and decided to take for her first rafting trip on the Middle Fork of the American River. Little did she know that on her adventure she would meet her future husband, now the  co-owner of RRA. She has not paid for another rafting trip since then. Although Amy will not always be on the frontlines of running the river, she may help you book your summer adventure or you will also see her in camp. She enjoys her career as a full-time Occupational Therapist and loves to spend time with her four year old and 1 year old sons. She has a passion for horses and hopes to combine her passion and career in the future.
Zack McGahey
Zack has been guiding for six years now, but has been rafting since he was a kid. Originally from Woodland, CA, Zack now lives in San Francisco. Having spent 5 years at UC Berkeley studying engineering and running track, he now works for the Biopharmaceutical company FibroGen, Inc, in South San Francisco, devoting much of his time to developing clinical product for various clinical trials. When not working or rafting, Zack has enjoyed backpacking and working in Europe, Scuba Diving and cave exploring in the Caribbean, rafting and free-falling in New Zealand, and surfing the San Francisco coast. He also moonlights as an amateur web designer for RRA.
Rebecca McGahey
Rebecca began rafting in 2006, when her then-boyfriend Zack was in his first year co-running River and Rock Adventures. Though she was terrified that first day, she quickly fell in love with the river and attended guide school the folllowing year. Although as a girl, Rebecca never anticipated rafting over a 21-foot high waterfall in New Zealand on her honeymoon, some of the greatest things in life come as surprises. Rebecca spends her time not on the river working at Genentech in South San Francisco. She has been dancing for most of her life and she is an avid traveler, having lived abroad in England for school and spent time travelling in Thailand, Costa Rica, and Fiji among other places.
Joe Ignaszewski
Joe started boating at the tender age of 11.  His first trip on the river was a discounted seat in a training boat that his father haggled at a boat show. They've been running family trips every year since.  His second trip down the class V Salmon (age 16) the company owners offered to send him to guide school.  The rest is history (although he wishes he didn’t have to grow up and get a real job).  He lived/worked either at the South Fork or the Cal Salmon every summer through the rest of high school and college (UC Davis) till he was about 22.  He has boated all over CA and a bit in Oregon. Now a guide with River and Rock Adventures, he still cooks the same river meals he learned when he was 16 (and impresses everyone he cooks them for), and still tells some of his favorite corny river jokes regularly.
Ryan Funk
A native to the Sacramento area, Ryan grew up loving the outdoors.  As a freshman in high school Ryan went with his father down the South Fork Gorge, that’s all it took to get hooked.  Ryan started guiding as a summer job during his time at sac state.  Recently graduated with a degree in Business Finance and a minor in Economics, Ryan now works for Wachovia working in business loans. Mostly, though he is just excited about focusing on another rafting season.
Peter Cole
Peter literally grew up in the back of a boat since his parents owned a whitewater rafting company. He began guiding commercially on the South Fork of the American River at age 14 but had been unofficially guiding off the back of his dad's raft since he was old enough to hold a paddle. He married a fellow river guide and is currently training his two daughters to follow in his footsteps. If you find yourself in Peter's boat you should expect to find jokes, stories, songs, candy, and most importantly, a safe and enjoyable trip. When not on the river, Peter is finishing his law degree at UC Davis and will be working for a law firm in San Francisco when he's done.
Dylan Register
Dylan is a valuable asset to our company as he has been with us since our rafting company was first born. In fact, he was on the inventory list when River and Rock Adventures was purchased. He has gone from camping in river vans, to sleeping in his sleeping bag under the stars, to having a place of his own. Don't let Dylan fool you with his jokes and sense of "lazze fair." Rasid on the tough streets of woodland, CA he is a talented river guide who knows be safe, have fun, and make his customers feel at ease.
Sedale Turbovsky
Sedale has grown up on the American River. A native of the Coloma area rafting has always been a part of his life. After attending guide school in Oregon he returned to the Coloma area to guide on the river he grew up on.  In addition to being a river rat he is an avid guitar player, who never misses a chance to entertain. Sedale is a legacy guide, working hard to outgrow the shadow of his father, who rated the American River with the current owners of River and Rock Adventures before the company even existed. Now in his second season guiding with the company, Sedale has already started to carve his own lasting image on the river.
Ryan Sokol
Ryan grew up on the Oregon coast in the little town of Bandon. As an avid outdoorsman, and a commercial fisherman for 6 years, he developed a strong passion for being on the water. Combined with an adventurous and fun loving spirit, his desire to get out on the water took him to guide school on the Rogue River in Oregon. Finally finding his calling, he hopes to eventually guide internationally allowing him to do what he loves year round. Although this is only his second year with RRA we expect great things from this young man. After a day on the river with him, you can expect to go away with great memories and a desire for more.
Ian Stout
Ian grew up in upstate New York. He is addicted to snowboarding and while teaching snowboarding he met a lovely girl named Amy. Amy had been teaching snowboarding for 3 years and rafting for longer. When spring came and the snow melted he chased Amy to the Adirondack Mountains and learned to guide (to impress her of course) on the Upper Hudson river. After two years on the Hudson and a lovely wedding, Ian and Amy drove west to seek out bigger mountains to ride and better rivers to run. This landed Ian at Kirkwood Mountain Resort and when the snow he was riding melted he found his way south to the American river and River and Rock Adventures. Ian also enjoys traveling, hiking,  and did I mention snowboarding? Yes Ian likes "White" water no mater which way you serve it up!
Amy Stout
Amy's first time rafting, at the age of 8, was on the America River and it was just a matter of time before she came back to it. Before moving out to South Lake Tahoe with her husband, Ian, she spent 6 years working for Hudson River Rafting Company, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. She graduated from Gordon college with a bachelors in Recreation and leisure and has been pursuing that ever since. She met her true love while snowboard instructing at Bristol, New York. Then dragged him to the river to make him into a raft guide. With time he learned and the two of them can now be found guiding for River and Rock this summer. Along with being extremely good looking, she is also a certified wilderness first responder.
Colby Green
Colby’s first trip down the river was when he was five, on a family trip for his brother’s birthday. His mom got hooked on the river and started guiding the following season. Pretty much growing up on the back of a boat, he became a river rat at a young age and has never outgrown it. Colby moved out of California in 1998, returned in 2005 and went to guide school with RRA the following summer. When Colby isn’t on the water he keeps busy snowboarding and mountain biking. He loves to entertain, and make people laugh, so if you end up on his boat you're sure to have a great time!
