At River and Rock Adventures our American River outdoor education program focuses on environmental preservation awareness, the importance of leadership as well as teamwork, and the value of respect for self and others. |
Through activities such as white water rafting, hiking and camping, our program provides physical, emotional and intellectual challenges while promoting personal growth and group development. Students who attend the River and Rock Adventures American River Outdoor Education Program will learn to work with their classmates to accomplish tasks, prepare outdoor meals, and navigate the breath-taking white water rafting section of the South Fork of the American River. Read below about our core curriculum and principles.
Our programs are best suited for children ages 12-16, though we can customize a program for other groups of students as well. Call us today and we can customize an outdoor education program for your school or camp.

White water rafting is a team-based adventure sport. It takes coordination, communication, and teamwork. Our professional staff of white water rafting guides work with students to understand all of these principles and act as a team while navigating the Upper and Lower sections of the South Fork of the American River. In addition, activities are planned in camp that focus on teamwork and problem solving. Our white water rafting trips and activities are the perfect blend of challenge and fun to really bring a group of students together. |

In addition to activities geared around small teams, the ultimate goal of River and Rock Adventures American River Outdoor Education Program is to bring together the entire student group as a whole and help students respect the concepts of community. All students who attend our program assist (supervised) in preparing and cooking meals, cleaning up, and preparing for trips. As a company, we respect our role as a small part of the greater American river community, and teach students that what we do and how we do it affects the community as a whole. |

The American River provides a very picturesque environment for experiencing the outdoors. Of course, this beautiful river would be nothing without respect and knowledge about our environment and habitat. Our staff of guides teach students not only about the river, but about the surrounding flora and fauna as well. Students can learn the origins of some modern medicine in nature as well as interesting facts about the local species of animals that are seen quite frequently on the water and in camp. |
River and Rock Adventures understands the importance of our watershed, particularly to white water rafting. The waters of the American River flow from the Sierra Nevadas and the flow is controlled through a series of dams. Important legislation is passed every day that affects the future of these waters and how they are controlled. Coinciding with our lessons about habitat is a detailed analysis of our important watersheds and how they are affected by changing environmental conditions and changing government legislation and regulation. |
Our camp on the American River is located 1 mile from Sutter's Mill, the first gold mining mill in California and the heart of the California Gold Rush. Students who attend our outdoor education program will get an opportunity to see important California history and understand more about the gold miners of the 1840's and their impact on our current society and environment. |
Safety is a top priority at River and Rock Adventures. We use our outdoor education program to teach students about the power of swift-water. We work with El Dorado County Parks give them basic instruction on how to be safe in these waters and help each other with basic swift-water rescue theory. We teach them important facts about river dynamics and hydraulics. Students will be able to have fun white water rafting while gaining a respect for the river.
